Pembrokshire Recreational Weekend

Scuba diving from Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire offers a wealth of underwater experiences, from exploring historic shipwrecks to encountering diverse marine life amidst stunning underwater landscapes.

Rich Maritime History and Wreck Diving

The waters around Milford Haven are a treasure trove for wreck diving enthusiasts, with over 350 documented shipwrecks. One notable site is the ‘Lucy’, a cargo ship that sank in 1967 and now rests upright at approximately 40 metres depth, offering a fascinating dive for experienced divers. Another intriguing wreck is the ‘Loch Shiel’, known as the ‘Whiskey Wreck’, which met its fate in 1894 while carrying a cargo of whiskey. These wrecks provide unique opportunities to delve into maritime history while observing how marine ecosystems have colonised these structures.

Some notable wrecks include:

  • The Dakotian (21m) – A WWII cargo ship sunk by a German bomber in 1940, now an artificial reef teeming with marine life.
  • The Lucy (42m) – A beautifully intact steamship that went down in 1967, great for tech divers.
  • The Behar (48m) – A deep, well-preserved wreck that’s an adventure for experienced divers.
  • The Smalls Lightship (22m) – A historic shipwreck near The Smalls lighthouse.

Diverse Marine Life

The Pembrokeshire coastline, particularly around the Skomer Marine Conservation Zone, is renowned for its biodiversity. Divers can encounter grey seals, porpoises, and a myriad of fish species. The underwater scenery is adorned with vibrant anemones, sponges, and sea slugs, making each dive a colourful experience.

Expect to see:

  • Conger eels, lobsters, and crabs hiding in wreck crevices.
  • Huge shoals of pollock, wrasse, and bass.
  • Playful seals at Skomer and Skokholm islands.
  • Jellyfish, nudibranchs, and octopus for macro photographers.

If you’re lucky, you may also spot sunfish (Mola mola) or even basking sharks in late summer.

Scenic Dive Sites

Beyond wrecks, Milford Haven offers access to scenic dive sites like ‘Stack Rocks’ and ‘Hens and Chicks’. These locations feature dramatic underwater landscapes with gullies and rock formations, providing habitats for species such as triggerfish.

Beyond wrecks, Milford Haven offers spectacular reefs, pinnacles, and caves. The rocky coastline and strong tidal flows have carved deep gullies and dramatic drop-offs. Notable sites include:

  • Stack Rocks – An exciting drift dive with stunning walls covered in anemones and sponges.
  • Hen & Chicks Reef – A hotspot for marine life, great for all experience levels.
  • The Smalls – A remote but rewarding site with caves, kelp forests, and swirling currents.

Let’s support John and get back to Pembrokeshire in the summer and fill this boat. I know Pembrokeshire is a long way for many, but these dates have meticulously been chosen to be outside of bloom and school holidays. This will be more of a recreational weekend than technical and ideal for those who like a little photography.
