Porthkerris 2022 – Autumn Long Weekender
For those that don’t know Porthkerris, Divers from the club have been returning to the site annually over the last 15 years and still love returning, the diving is very easy going with mainly reef/scenic dives in the 15 – 30m range, those more rust orientated also have a few options, my personal favourite being the Mohegan, a large wreck lying from 15m at the bow to about 29m at the stern, sat on a lovely reef full of life.
I intend to arrive around midday on the Thursday and have an easy-going shore dive around Drawna Reef (Max 15m) to kick the weekend off, anyone that wants to join would be welcome.
Celtic Kitten Shuttle
After speaking with Jo, she couldn’t confirm if the Celtic Cat would be running as a charter or shuttle next summer. With this in mind I intend to organise the trips with the expectation that Porthkerris will be running both boats as shuttles and therefore I intend to book us onto the Celtic Kitten with a max of 12 divers per shuttle. This will allow us to have a scalable attendee list of a few divers or a couple of dozen.
Don’t forget that there are ample opportunities for shore diving.
Gas Fills & Considerations
The dive centre has its own “gas shed” so air and nitrox fills can be done on site. That said, it is recommended that you arrive with a full cylinder. As we are diving shuttles, you will only need one cylinder as it can be refilled between dives.
Minimum and Maximum Numbers
As the trip is being organised with the expectation of the boats doing shuttles, maximum diver numbers can be flexible. However both boats are limited to 12 divers, so as a maximum number the trip will be limited to 24 divers (4 shuttles per day) and can run with a minimum of 2 divers. As we are using the shuttle system we are not responsible for filling the boat.
Qualifications
I would recommend being trained to a depth of 30m and experienced in UK waters to gain the most from the weekends however, a lot of the sites are accessible with an entry level dive cert.
Whilst I was diving from the kitten this summer Dave (skipper) dropped 2 divers with depth restrictions in shallower depths and the rest of us on the deeper reef, this trip can be available to most certification levels if you’re interested but not sure if your certification level/ experience is appropriate drop me an email and we can discuss it. Plenty of time to get some training in beforehand.
Price Increases
Jo also advised that it’s possible that the 2022 shuttle prices will potentially increase, however she has said that provided I can get the bookings confirmed before the new year they will honour the 2021 prices for both trips.
Therefore, the pricing will be £60 per diver per day for two dives if confirmed in 2021, as they haven’t released the prices for next year at this time, I cannot confirm prices for divers booking onto this trip in 2022.
Payment Terms
As the trips are quite far in advance, I’m looking at a staggered payment. Porthkerris require a 50% deposit per diver per dive as explained in their booking T&Cs so this will be required to secure your place.
- 50% of the dive price at time of booking to secure your place on the boat (2 days = £60, 3 days = £90)
- 25% of the dive price by the end of February 2022 (2 days = £30, 3 days = £45)
- 25% of the dive price by the end of May 2022 (2 days = £30, 3 days = £45).
Any late joiners will need to pay up to the scheduled date at time of booking, plus any potential 2022 price increase difference (TBC).
Normal diver etiquette and club ethos payment terms apply regarding this trip. Once your deposit has been received, you will be committed to the full payment including interim and final payments. In case of cancellation by you, any deposit, interim payment or final payment is non-refundable unless a replacement diver can be found.
Accommodation
You will need to sort your own accommodation for the trips and there are plenty of options in the area including at the centre itself. If you’re struggling to find accommodation, I would be happy to point out some options. I have already booked my camping pitch on site.
Food and Drink
It’s worth noting that the Cafe on site is a bit up in the air, it’s not guaranteed that there will be any food available on site, although Jo is hopeful that someone will take it on for the summer 2022 season.
I will look to book meals closer to the time, but I would expect to follow the Seahorse tradition of a sat night BBQ on site (food to be bought by us then price divided between number of divers), and a pub meal on the Thursday and Friday nights.
