Tango – Weymouth – Target HMS Sidon (P259)
We are diving this weekend on hardboat Tango of Weymouth. With four dives over two days, each day will consist of one wreck dive and one drift dive, with the last drift on Sunday being a scallop drift.
HMS Sidon (P259)
With a number of wrecks to choose from, the consensus is that for one of the days we would like to visit HMS Sidon. Launched in 1942, on the morning of June 16th 1955 she sank in Portland Harbour with the loss of 13 lives. On that fateful day, one of the so called ‘Fancy’ torpedoes exploded in one of the forward torpedo tubes. Twelve men died instantly, while the remaining crew escaped from the aft hatches before she sank, settling by the bows with a list to starboard.
One week later the wreck was raised and towed into a causeway on Chesil Beach. The bodies of the 13 casualties were removed and buried with full honours in the Portland Royal Naval Cemetery overlooking the harbour.
Sidon was brought to the surface, but sunk again to act as an ASDIC target on 14 June 1957 off the coast of Chickerell in Dorset.
