Two To Tango – Weymouth Wreck Weekend

With the success of our 2021 trip to Weymouth, we have secured another weekend of wreck diving during the late summer of 3rd and 4th September 2022.

The outline plan is two dives per day, one wreck and one drift and hence four dives over the weekend. We expect one of the wrecks to by HMS Sidon (P259) which has significant historical interest and then we can choose either of any other wreck sites around the +/- 30 metre depth. Sites could include HMS M2, Binnendijk, Elena R, Alex van Opstal, St Dunstan, HMS Landrail or the popular Aeolian Sky. The Sunday drift could be over a scallop bed.

Prices and Payments

The cost of this weekend is £112.00 per diver for four dives over the weekend. You will need to pay a £12.00 deposit immediately to reserve your place. An intermediate payment of £50.00 will be due January 2022 and final £50.00 payment in June 2022.

Normal diver etiquette and club ethos payment terms apply regarding this trip. Any deposit, interim payment or final payment is non-refundable unless a replacement diver can be found.

If you book after January 2022, then the £12.00 deposit and £50.00 interim payment will be due. If any spaces remain after January 2022, then they will be offered to other clubs and individuals.

Diver Qualifications

There was some confusion as to the depths and experience levels required for the 2021 trip as HMS Sidon was quoted at a 36m depth and that it may not appeal to recreational divers. I can attest to the fact that 36m is the seabed and the maximum depth on our 2021 dive was 33 metres at the prop at the stern. You do not need to go that deep as lot of the interesting sightseeing along the side and top of the submarine at a depth between 27m and 30m.

That said, you should be qualified to a minimum PADI OWD or equivalent. You should have a minimum of 12 UK sea dives and be qualified in drysuit diving. You should be comfortable in minimal visibility and be able to deploy your own DSMB unassisted. You will need a primary light/torch and ideally a backup.

You should arrive in Weymouth sometime on on Friday 2nd September. You will be able to load Tango on Friday evening or Saturday morning to suit your travel arrangements. Ropes off times will be confirmed nearer the time.

Those on single cylinders will need two. Please arrive with them filled and ready to dive on Saturday morning. Gas refills will be made at either Old Harbour Divers in Weymouth or Skindeep or Underwater Explorers in Portland on Saturday afternoon.

You should make your own food and drink plans for the Friday, but as soon as we have a full set of names, we can make a group booking somewhere.

Parking in Weymouth is not as difficult as one may think. Charter parking permits are available from Tango at a price of £7.20 per day, paid into the honesty box.

You will need to arrange your own accommodation for the two evenings of Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd September. These dates are the end of the summer school holidays, so early booking is recommended.

For those who are on a budget or want to be in the nightlife area of Custom House Quay, you can take a berth on Tango for just £10.00 a night. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. Toilet and shower facilities are opposite tango’s berth at the Harbour Master office and open 24h.
