Lanzarote November 2021 – Six days of Blissful Blue Water Diving

Join us for Lanzarote November 2021 six days of Blissful Blue Water Diving on the Island of Lanzarote.  The volcanic island of Lanzarote has some breath taking scenery above and below the water. In November surface temperatures  range from 25°C making surface intervals very comfortable. The water temperature averages between 20°C and 22°C .  Plan is to fly out Sunday 31st October 2021 and fly back the following Sunday 7th November 2021, this allows for 6 days of diving. We will look to do two dives per day and on one day make that three dives with a night dive.

The diving will be a mix of shore diving and rib diving throughout the week.  We use Aquatis Diving who are based in Costa Teguise.  With many dives sites divers will be spoilt for choice. Most of the diving is reef/scenic, there are a few wrecks but not many.

The sea life in Lanzarote is fantastic and November is breeding season for Rays and Angel Sharks.  Normally divers can see increased numbers as they come nearer to shore to breed.  The sea life is varied you can expect to see Angel Sharks, Sting Rays, Torpedo Rays, Butterfly Rays, Barracuda, Octopus, Grouper, Fire Worms, Nudibranchs, three different variety’s of Conger Eel and a vast variety of fish. There are also some beautiful Sea Fans and Flowers as well as the volcanic scenery.  Less common to see but possible are Orcas, Dolphins, Turtles and Hammerhead sharks.

The Week

The plan for the week is to Fly out on Sunday 31st October. We will be collected Monday morning from our hotels and taken to the dive centre. Here we will transfer our kit into the dive bags, do paperwork and then start our diving.

It is hard to put an exact plan down as wind and weather can change plans but a rough idea of what we hope to cover in the week is as follows:

Day 1 - Playa Chica

Short 20 minute drive from Costa Teguise. There are public toilets here and a really good beach Café. Changing takes place on the promenade and it is an easy walk in all directions to the various launch points.

Cathedral –  A rather grand name for the cave but it is a nice dive if a bit of a swim to get there.
Lots of vertical walls, definitely worth doing.  Be aware, can be a 40m dive at high tide, certainly plan for 35m.

The Blue Hole –  Is a swim through arch/cave about 5m long, it is around 23m deep at one end, descending to around 30m at the other end, (depending on the tide). Alternatively there is also a very nice reef  to the North of the Cathedral.

Day 2 - Boat Diving Puerto Del Carmen

Harbour Wrecks – There were a total of 7 boats sunk deliberately around 50 years ago.  Some have since disappeared in storms or been buried under the harbour wall extension.  There are 2 prominent wrecks literally the other side of the harbour wall.  It is best to descend to the smaller, deeper wreck which lies at 40m, lots of interesting metal.
Then ascending up to the very large and still largely intact wreck which starts at around 30m.  There are some swim throughs and LOADS of fish.  A really good fun dive
We will do two dives off the rib, coming back into the harbour between dives. Toilets/showers and changing room at the Harbour to use.

Night DiveBlack Beach – Night dive from Black Beach. We kit up at Playa Chica and then it is a 5 minute walk fully kitted to the entry point at Black Beach. Beautiful night dive, fairly shallow. The dive takes you back round to Playa Chica Harbour steps. A good place to see Octopus and many other Sea Creatures at night.

Day 3 - Boat Diving to the North

Canyon – Beautiful dive through a canyon. Normally the entry to the water is from the land but it is a tricky entry. we have arranged for a rib to take us to the North to dive this. Fantastic scenery and sea life.

Chimneys – A new site for us in the North, the exit from this site is known to be very challenging when diving from land. We hope to be able to do this site from the rib.

Mala – Alternatively if either of the above are not diveable we would look to dive from Mala. The usual dive site at Mala is located in a Nudist Village!  Access to the dive site is tricky with a slippery descent down a cliff to an area below with 2 ladders going into the sea.  Usually it is possible to giant stride into the water and climb out using the ladders.  It can be quite difficult in a swell. Hopefully diving from the boat will make this much easier!

Day 4 - Boat Diving Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca – A very pleasant drive over the mountains takes you down towards Playa Blanca.  With almost guaranteed sunshine 365 days a year and breath-taking views across to Fuerteventura it is easy to understand why so many people like this part of the island.

Diving from ‘Marina Rubicon’ is a must.  The facilities are excellent with showers, changing room, loos etc.  We usually load the RIB up for two dives.  There are a variety of reef dives from Playa Blanca. We will have 2 dives from the Marina.  We do not come back in-between dives, surface interval is on the rib.

Day 5  - A Day of choice!

There are sites that we will not of covered from the locations above. Day 5 will be a day to choose any sites we have not covered.

Day 6 - Playa Flamingo

Playa Flamingo – A two dive day, Playa Flamingo is slightly West of ‘Marina Rubicon’.  A very easy entry down the beach and a pleasant 150m surface swim take you out to a smashing little reef, the first thing that strikes you is the loud clicking coming from the reef.  A drop off takes you down to around 18m through shoals of fish.  All sorts to be seen out here from Trumpet Fish and Barracuda to Reef Lobsters and Arrow Crabs.  We have seen Angel Sharks and Butterfly Rays here as well as Octopus!. Both dives are shallow, 18m max, this makes them good dives for the Saturday. We will have both dives done by lunchtime leaving a clear 24hrs before flights home!

Afternoon BBQ  – Aquatis

What better way to finish the week than with a BBQ and some beers back at the dive centre. A chance to sit back, unwind and socialise!

Flights/Accommodation

You will need to book your own flights and accommodation. Hotels need to be in Costa Teguise.  We will be looking to book into Galeon Playa Apartments, well located for Dive Centre, Restaurants, Bars and Beach. We will be flying from Gatwick to Arrecife, this seems to be the best for Sunday flights. If you sign up we will help search for what you need.

Equipment

You can take your own dive equipment or you can hire from the dive centre.  Recommended 5mm – 7mm wetsuit or drysuit.
Cylinders/re-fills and weights are provided by Aquatis in the cost.

Certification

AOW or equivalent, certified to 40m would be good but not essential, we can all stay at the depth we are certified to.
